In no particular order...
1. White Apes (AC 6, HD 4, MV 120, #AT 2 claws, D 1-4/1-4, Save F2, ML 7, AL N) - Very S&S feel. I made sure the first dungeon encounter the characters had in my C&C campaign was with a White Ape.
2. Carrion Crawler (AC 7, HD 3+1*, MV 120, #AT 8 tentacles, D 0-Paralysis, Save F2, ML 9, AL N) - I love these. Tentacles and they can eat you when your helpless...Nice!
3. Red Dragon (AC -1, HD 10**, MV 90/240, #AT 2 claws/1 bite plus Breath Weapon, D 1-8/1-8/4-32, Save F10, ML 10, AL C) - Just gotta have them.
4. Orcs (AC 6, HD 1, MV 120, #AT 1 weapon, D by weapon, Save F1, ML 8, AL C) - the staple bad guy.
5. Thouls (AC 6, HD 3**, MV 120, #AT 2 claws or 1 weapon, D 1-3/1-3 or by weapon, Save F3, ML 10, AL C) - These things are crazy.
6. Efreeti (AC 3, HD 10*, MV 90/240, #AT 1, D 2-16, Save F15, ML 12, AL C) - My demons in B/X.
7. Bone Golem (AC 2, HD 8, MV 120, #AT 4 weapons, D by weapon, Save F4, ML 12, AL N) - what evil wizard is complete without a 4 armed golem made from the bones of dead men?
8. Giant Scorpions (AC 2, HD 4*, MV 150, #AT 2 claws/1 sting, D 1-10/1-10/1-4+poison, Save F2, ML 11, AL C) - Another great S&S feel.
9. Spectre (AC 2, HD 6**, MV 150/300, #AT 1 touch + special, D 1-8 + 2 level drain, Save F6, ML 11, AL C) - when they really were among the mightiest of the undead and that illustration is GREAT.
10. Men - can't get more evil than them.

If I were to include monsters peculiar to B/X, my favorites would be the vampiric Giant Bats that can actually turn you into an unspecified Undead creature; Devil Swine, which make great creepy masterminds; and Rhagodessae, which I misinterpreted as having oversized human heads when I was a kid.

ReplyDeleteWhat, no giant snakes? I thought at least one or two enormous serpents would appear on the list, given their customary role of eating PCs in your adventures!
